Het trimmen van een Golden Retriever

Step 5

And now the finishing touch, anal gland, cleaning the ears, keeping the teeth in good shape, bathing and drying the coat.
To keep your Golden in good condition there is more you can do.
  • Anal glands.
These glands are located on either side of the anus and sometime they become filled with secretion. Often the dog will rub the area along the ground. You can learn by yourself how to empty the anal glands or you go to your vet and let it do there. Normally a doggie can empty them by themselve, sometimes it happens from its own after great fear. If your doggie is biting the start of his tail often, or try to lick his anus or even gets on his tailstart or tighs big hot spot the anal glands can be the problem, By emptying them your doggie will get big relieve. Is hard for me to tell how you can learn to empty them, so hope the picture is a good help for you. You have to push on the sides, if you try you can feel on the sides the anal glands, push on the outside of the anal glands
  • Cleaning the ears
Use an earcleaner, you can buy it at your vet's. Don't clean the ears with earcleaner if you want to attend a show in a few days, ears will become then very greasy inside. When you go to show in a few days, just use a  piece of cotton wool, and clean only the visible parts inside the ear, so the ear looks clean. I check my doggies ears every week and clean if necessary, if very dirty use a earcleaner(again not just right before a show).

Put in the ear a few drops of the earcleaner, give the ear a massage so that the fluid can go more inside the ear. Then take again piece of cotton wool and remove the dirt you see, so only in the upper part of the ear, only the part you can see. Next day clean again with cotton wool the dirt you can see. If you have a doggie who has dirty ears often, do this every week. By trimming the ear, the ear can breath better, so another reason to trimm . If you doggie has severe pain in his ear, go to your vet.
I'm not a vet, so check with him what is wrong
  • Teeth
Sometimes when you check the teeth of your doggie you can see  tartar. If there is an excessive tartar build-up, ask your vet to remove it. Some people give their Golden lots of bones and hard biscuits to prevent to get tartar, others brush the teeth of their doggie with a toothbrush and toothpaste, especially for doggies(is without fluor).
When getting older, the tartar problem will become bigger, so keep an eye otherwise sometimes you can get gum recession.
  • Bathing and drying of the coat
You don't need to bath your Golden often, in fact is better to do it not and only when necessary(smelling)  or when going to show.
Use a special dog shampoo, you can buy in a petshop.
    How to use the shampoo?
First make the coat wet thoroughly with not to hot water, then work the shampoo in a lather, starting from the head to the tail. Leave the shampoo three or four minutes    and then rinxe thoroughly. This removing of the soap is the most important part, don't stop to early otherwise can cause irritation or dull coat. Don't forget to rinse the inside legs and the underside of the dog where the shampoo collects.
For drying the coat I first use some towels and make the hair toweldry, then put Golden on the table and use the hair-drier to dry the coat, by brushing and blowing, so the coat will lay flat round the skin.
Some dogs don't like it at all to be dried with a hair-drier, so then you make it towel dry and keep brushing the hair flat till the hair is dry, don't do that in the evening, the hair will not be dry when you go to bed and next morning you will find a big surprise hair standing to all sides.
Some also use T-shirts, be sure the hair is laying flat under the T-shirt.
This was the last step, check you Golden weekly, remove knots if necessary.
And to keep your Golden in good health, give him a regular exercize and lots of tender care.

 Practice makes perfect
